Al-Azhar Condemns Calls for “Judge Muhammad Day”

Al-Azhar Statement on the Judge Muhammad Day

Al-Azhar condemns the irresponsible calls announced in Western and international media regarding the so-called "International Judge Muhammad Day", which is to be held by a group of spiteful and brainsick persons. Such persons have always maliciously raised suspicions about Islam and Muslims under the pretext of freedom of opinion and freedom of expression.

Condemning such excessive calls that kindle the spirit of religious and sectarian extremism, Al-Azhar thus declares the following:

1. Islam is a seal Divine Message revealed from Almighty Allah (Exalted is He) to His Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). It is a universal message for all mankind, and the natural disposition (fitrah) with which Almighty Allah has created mankind.

It is also a source of guidance for people in all their religious, political and economic affairs. It preaches peace, ordains justice and calls for beneficence among all people.

So, alleging that Islam is a positive or man-made religion is a foolish and silly act that bespeaks perversion in terms of thought and opinion. It is not a new allegation, since it was repeated by the disbelievers of Quraysh during the lifetime of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and it will still be echoed by their similar aberrant persons at present and in the future.

2. Islam is a religion that calls for coexistence and familiarity among people, and draws on reason and logic that maintains "dialogue of civilizations" and peaceful coexistence.

It is not a religion that calls for the "clash of civilizations" or disseminates hatred, conflict or enmity among peoples. Rather, it exhorts compassion, benevolence and sympathy towards peaceful followers of other religions, as the Almighty (Exalted is He) says, {Allah does not forbid you to deal justly and kindly with those who fought not against you on account of religion and did not drive you out of your homes. Verily, Allah loves those who deal with equity} (Al-Mumtahinah: 8).

Here, it is necessary to commend the stance of some reasonable fellow followers of other heavenly religions, inside and outside the country, who rejected these extremist and fanatical callas, and who called to dialogue and tolerance against the calls for dispute and antagonism that bring about separation, not unity, destruction, not construction, and corruption, not reform.

May Allah's Peace and Blessings be upon you!
